LOS ANGELES—On Tuesday, June 4, Los Angeles city leaders and security officials convened for the start of the first national homeland security conference.

Outgoing Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa opened the National Homeland Security Conference (NHSC) with an address. The event is expected to have more than 2,000 people along with the Counter-Terrorism Conference. The city is also hosting the Counter-Terrorism Conference for the first time.
The Homeland Security Conference is a result of the partnership between the Los Angeles/Long Beach Urban Area and the National Homeland Security Association Inc. It is being held from June 4 – 7 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.
The conference is being hosted in collaboration with the Leaders in Counterterrorism Conference and Major Cities Chief Intel Commanders Meeting. The National Homeland Security Conference 2013 is hoped to be a direct way for industry professionals from the nation’s largest metropolitan areas from all U.S states and territories. The Leaders in Counterterrorism Conference is the leading event in the counterterrorism field.
The grantees from all of the Homeland Security Grant Initiatives have received over three billion dollars of grant money and include: Ports, Transit, U.S. Department of Defense, Citizen Corps Programs and Transit.
The conference’s agenda includes speaking on port security, transit security, and emergency management.
