LOS ANGELES—This 2013-2014 school year, students across the 800 cafeterias within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will get a mouthful of the new and improved breakfast and lunch menus that will provide them with healthy and kid-friendly food options.

With classes in session starting on August 12, students will have various food items and menus starting on August 15.The new cafeteria menu was created by students for students through district-wide food competitions where students were challenged to invent both tasty and nutritious breakfast and lunch items plus having to be within a $1 budget per meal. The student-cooks invented recipes with names like “Tex Mex Cornbread and Black Bean Mountain" and “Warm Pear and Raisin Delight.”

According to a press release by LAUSD, “Research shows that students who eat nutritious meals in school earn higher test scores and tend to make healthier food choices throughout the day. Being the second largest school district in the country, the LAUSD serves more than 650,000 meals daily that meet rigorous school nutrition guidelines. Since 2011, LAUSD has offered generous portions of fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy products and whole grains that are sourced locally, the majority within 200 miles of the District. It has been using sustainable, organic wheat from a California farm that practices water conversation, habitat preservation and air quality management and workers rights as supported by the Good Food Procurement Resolution that passed last year. LAUSD has also reduced salt, added sugars, fats, and oils, as well as eliminated artificial additives in all its school meals.”
