L.A. City Council Repeals Medical Marijuana Ban

LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles City Council voted 11-2 on Tuesday to retract their own ban on medical marijuana dispensaries instituted in July. The ban,
which was supposed to go to the ballot in March of next year, was suspended in August before going into effect after fervent supporters of the dispensaries collected 50,000 signatures. The goal of the ban was to shut down the estimated 1,000 marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles and allow small, regulated groups of patients to grow the drug in their home as an alternative to the dispensaries.

One of the biggest advocates for the ban to be lifted is City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who has been battling cancer and using medical marijuana to help him combat the pain. The other members of the council that voted for the ban to be lifted stated that they needed more clarity on the state’s law regarding the medical use of marijuana. Adding further upheaval to the controversial issue, federal authorities have turned their focus to many of the functioning dispensaries with the intent of shutting them down.
