These four women were presented with an award for courage.
Lacey presented the honorees with awards for courage at a Courageous Citizen Awards ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Los Angeles International Airport Hotel.

The four honorees were Leanora Powell of Inglewood, Omar Solano of Van Nuys, Erik Espinoza of San Gabriel and Malik Mack of Los Angeles.

In June 2011, Powell attempted to stop a gang member who was battering a man on Long Beach Blvd. The suspect attacked Powell and used a hot sauce bottle to repeatedly slash her. Powell later testified against the defendant, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to 27 years in state prison.

In August 2012, a pregnant woman from New York was speaking on her phone while she waited for her lunch at a Beverly Hills restaurant patio. A suspect jumped over the railing of the patio from the sidewalk and grabbed for the woman’s phone. Solano, an employee at the restaurant, saw the woman struggling with the suspect and ran to the woman’s aid. Solano pinned the suspect and physically restrained him until the police arrived.

Espinoza and Mack were honored after they returned the valuables of a victim who was mugged. On July 2011, a woman sought help from a group of bicyclists after someone pushed her to the ground and stole her purse, cell phone and keys. Espinoza and Mack set out on their bikes and found the suspect returning the purse to the victim.

“I extend my gratitude to our four Courageous Citizens,” Lacey said. “In each of these cases the honorees set aside their personal interests for the greater good.”

The District Attorney’s office presents Courageous Citizen Awards several times a year to citizens who have performed extraordinary acts of valor.
