LOS ANGELES—On Thursday, October 11 Kiewit employee Adolfo Figueroa was crushed under a 3,000 pound beam. The death occurred on the $1 billion dollar widening project of the 405 freeway near the Santa Monica Boulevard exit at 2:40 a.m. Reports state that the beam fell from the crane.
Figueroa had been working for Kiewit since May of 2011 and was currently assisting in the Kiewit Infrastructure West Project. While co-workers attempted to remove him from beneath the beam, they were unsuccessful. Work on the freeway will be halted for an investigation of Figueroa’s death.
Los Angeles resident Figueroa is survived by his wife and three children. He was 42 years-old.
The project began in 2009, and this is the first death that has occurred. Kiewit officials have expressed their condolences for his family. Grief counselors were made available for fellow construction workers to speak with.
