Police Commission Nominations Approved
Posted by Melissa Simon on Sep 3, 2013 - 9:23:05 AM

LOS ANGELES—The City Council approved Mayor Eric Garcetti’s nominations for police commission on Friday, August 30.

By a vote of 14-0, the council confirmed all four nominees, who will each serve five-year terms.

“The mayor got it right with the nominees,” said Councilman Mitch Englander, chair of the council’s Public Safety Committee. “I cannot remember ever seeing such a strong group of individuals named to a city commission," he added.

In addition to current Commissioner Robert Saltzman, Garcetti nominated Steve Soboroff, current chairman of the Weingart Foundation and former chairman of Playa Capital; Paula Madison, chief executive of the Sparks and former president of NBC Los Angeles; Kathleen Kim, professor at Loyola Law School specializing in human trafficking as it relates to the immigrant community; and Sandra Figueroa-Villa, executive director of El Pueblo Centro.

“First day as Police Commissioner a good one. Congrats to my fellow commissioners. Looking forward to serving L.A.,” Soboroff tweeted on Friday.

The police commission is responsible for setting the LAPD’s policies, approving the $1 billion annual budget and overseeing operations, including the important task of determining whether an officer-involved shooting and other serious uses of force were appropriate.

All four nominees said they are committed to improving LAPD relations with the immigrant community as well as looking into how the gang injunction is implemented, including how a reformed gang member can be removed from the list.
