LOS ANGELES—On Tuesday, August 20, Los Angeles County Coroner officials reportedly found traces of drugs in late journalist Michael Hastings at the time of his death last June.

The accident that killed 33-year-old Hastings was a result of the journalist reportedly driving on Highland Avenue at a high speed when he crashed into a tree. His vehicle went up in flames and there have been several conspiracy theories involving his death.

The Los Angeles County Corner released Hastings’ autopsy detailing the accidental death in a 17-page report. “The cause of death was massive blunt force trauma consistent with a high speed front-end impact”¬¶Toxicology shows a small amount of amphetamine in the blood, consistent with possible intake of methamphetamine many hours before death, unlikely to have an intoxicative effect at the time of the accident," states the report.

Hastings had battled with alcoholism and had a 14-year sobriety until a month before the crash and was suspected of substance abuse using DMT, a hallucinogenic. The crash happened at the time that Hastings family was staging an intervention to help him with detox.

The acclaimed journalist is known for the undercover expose that led to the resignation of General Stanley Chrystal as the U.S. Commander in Afghanistan as part of a 2010, Rolling Stone article.
