Police Officer Arrested For DUI
Posted by Sebastian Sarti on Jun 10, 2013 - 10:04:47 PM

LOS ANGELES—A police captain of the Los Angeles Police Department has been removed from his position as commander of the department’s Rampart due to his arrest for suspicion of drunk driving.

On Thursday, May 30, a California Highway Patrol officer arrested Officer Ruiz at around 1:30 a.m. The arrest occurred on the 101 Freeway in Sherman Oaks. Officer Ruiz is a 25-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Ruiz is no longer running the station and will be awaiting the investigation’s results before possibly returning to his old position. He has been reassigned to a non-field assignment until the LAPD’s case is closed against him.

Officer Ruiz was off duty at the time of the alleged incident. Since no crash occurred and nobody was injured, Ruiz is being charged with a less-serious misdemeanor. Normally, a suspected drunk driver is taken into custody and placed in jail, but in Ruiz’s case the arresting officer decided to simply impound the vehicle and release Ruiz to a friend or family member.

Ruiz became an officer for the Los Angeles Police Department when he was 21 years old. He was promoted to a captain position with overseeing responsibilities in the Rampart Division in February 2009.
