Season Is Over For L.A. Sparks
Posted by Michael Mintos on Oct 8, 2012 - 3:48:31 PM

LOS ANGELES—The Minnesota Lynx handed the Los Angeles Sparks a heartbreaking 80-79 loss on Sunday, eliminating them from the playoffs and officially bringing their season to a close. Candace Parker attempted to will her team to a victory by producing 33 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks, a steal and an unbelievable 30 foot three-pointer with 1:31 remaining to put her team up by two. It wasn’t enough, however, as the Sparks could not overcome a three-pointer by Lynx guard Monica Wright with 1:14 left to play that put Minnesota ahead and diminished the Sparks’ chances at advancing to the WNBA Finals.

L.A. missed several opportunities to put the visiting team away and force a third game in the series. They went on a 17-0 scoring run to end the third quarter and were up 13 points, but could not ultimately hold down the Lynx, led by Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore who had 21 and 20 points respectively. The Sparks’ final attempt to win the game also was a missed opportunity as they ran a poorly executed play with 6 seconds left that produced a desperate, heavily contested shot at the basket.

The 10,791 people in attendance at the Staples Center saw Kristi Toliver score 16 points and Alana Beard score 15 to help the outstanding effort by Parker. The Sparks also had an improved rebounding performance but they only shot 50% from the free throw line and had 17 turnovers.
