Suspect Pleads Not Guity For USC Shooting
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Nov 5, 2012 - 6:05:48 PM

LOS ANGELES—Brandon Spencer pleaded not guilty on Monday, November 5 to four counts of attempted murder in connection to the Halloween shooting that occurred on the USC campus which injured four people.

The shooting took place just before midnight outside a crowded party at the Tutor Campus Center near the university's Tommy Trojan Statue on Wednesday, October 31. Los Angeles police and USC officials have stated that the shooting was a result of a heated argument between two people who were not affiliated with USC.

Four people were wounded, one critically who was identified as former Crenshaw High School football star, Geno Hall. The three bystanders, none of which were students, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Hall was the 2009 L.A. City Football Player of the Year and is currently a student and football player at West Los Angeles Community College.

One of the victims, Davonte Smith, was a friend of Hall's who attended the party with him and was shot in the foot. Hall suffered from seven gunshot wounds in the stomach, left thigh, leg, buttocks and arm. He is reported to be in stable condition.

Mere minutes after the shots were fired, the campus security arrived on scene to recover the handgun and detain the two suspects who attempted to run. The campus went on lockdown for several hours after the shooting, but was eventually lifted and classes continued as scheduled.

USC's Black Student Assembly co-sponsored the Halloween party and announced on Monday that they would stop hosting parties for the remainder of the semester. Instead, they plan to focus on cultural programming and helping the university improve its campus security.

According to the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, Spencer is a security guard with an active license. Officials have confirmed that the shooting was gang-related and Spencer himself is linked to a gang.

The 20-year-old Inglewood native made a brief court appearance and was held on bail for $2.4 million. His lawyer has stated that he does not have a criminal record, and he was scheduled to begin classes on Monday at UCLA in a nursing and EMT program.

If convicted, Spencer may be sentenced to life in prison. His preliminary hearing was set for December 6 by Superior Court Judge Shelly Torrealba.
