Uganda Burn Victim Flown To LA For Surgeries
Posted by Katherine Noland on Nov 20, 2012 - 5:13:49 PM

LOS ANGELES—With the help of a local LA Attorney and the Children’s Burn Foundation,11-year-old burn victim Adolf Baguma from Uganda has been flown to LA to undergo surgery that hopefully allow him to walk again.

At age seven, the child’s aunt burned him on the back of his legs with hot banana leaves as punishment for trying to take food. The burns were never treated and spread at a 90-degree angle, rendering his inability to stand or walk. Real estate and business litigation attorney Laine Wagenseller discovered the boy after taking a trip to Uganda where he heard about Baguma’s story. Upon cooperation with the Children’s Burn Foundation (based in Sherman Oaks) and a lot of paper work, arrangements were made to have him flown to L.A. to see doctor Peter Grossman who will perform the surgeries at the West Hills Hospital and Medical Center’s Burn Center.

The Children’s Burn Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support services for child burn survivors under 18 and their families, both physically and psychologically. They also promote burn prevention and fire safety seminars. As stated on their website, “According to the World Health Organization, 260 children die from burns every day.”

Baguma will be staying at a Wagensellers family member’s residence until the surgeries are over. With them will also stay his English speaking guardian who will help translate between the boy and family and help him accommodate to the vastly different lifestyle here in California from the less than favorable conditions of his native home.
