LOS FELIZ—Authorities are seeking the driver of a minivan that hit a cyclist and did not stop the car causing the victim to lose his right leg.
Damian Kevitt, 36, was bicycling west on the Zoo Drive 5 Freeway overpass near Griffith Park on Sunday, February 17 when a driver in a mini van that was stuck in heavy traffic made a sudden left turn and hit Kevitt. He was reportedly knocked onto the hood of the minivan and then fell to the ground where he became stuck in the undercarriage of the minivan.
The driver allegedly accelerated the vehicle and dragged Kevitt about 600 feet down the Zoo Drive on-ramp until he fell from the minivan. The vehicle continued traveling south on the 5 Freeway and was described as an older grey Toyota Sienna with a "for rent" sign on it. Doctor Elijah Wasson stopped in order to help the fallen victim until paramedics arrived about 45 minutes later.
Kevitt broke 20 bones including his pelvis, arms, legs, wrists, ribs and fingers. A few teeth were broken as well and his right leg had to be amputated below the knee. In addition, Kevitt suffered from severe road rash on his chest and back from the collision.
He has undergone several surgeries and reportedly requires a few more. Reports from the victim's mother, Michelle Kevitt Kirkland, state that doctors are working to save Kevitt's left leg.
