Griffith Park Burglaries Prompt Sign Campaign
Posted by Melissa Simon on Aug 30, 2013 - 2:31:14 PM

LOS FELIZ—Due to a high number of car-related crimes in Griffith Park, Councilman Tom LaBonge joined with LAPD to tackle vehicle thefts by implementing a “Lock It, Hide It, Keep It” sign campaign.

“A recent wave of burglaries from motor vehicles has made its way through Griffith Park, threatening what is an incredible urban outdoor experience,” LaBonge said. “This month, I partnered with the Northeast Division, notably Captain Jeffrey Bert and Senior Lead Officer Leo Rey, to put up warning signs that may have a part in combating some of this type of crime.”

On August 20, LaBonge, Bert and Rey gathered to unveil the newly installed signs in an effort to “cut down on a rash of vehicle-related burglary crimes in the park,” according to the release.  LaBonge said these simple measures could help reduce the number of would-be targets.

“Already, this effort is seeing results,” he said. “In the months of June and July, there were 17 auto-related crimes in Griffith Park, most of which were burglaries from motor vehicles. There were 75 in total this calendar year.”

“Lock It, Hide It, Keep It” refers to locking your vehicle, hiding your valuables and keeping your property with you when leaving your car.

The campaign, which was funded by LaBonge, includes the installation of 18 signs throughout the park since August 1, with only one auto-related crime to date.

“I was proud to fund this effort, but a series of signs cannot by themselves fix the problem of car burglaries in Griffith Park,” he said. “We must continue to remain vigilant and heed the warnings that the signs provide. Only 3 percent of these burglaries are ever solved."
