LOS FELIZ—KCET has announced they will be moving their studios to Burbank, Calif. The decision comes after the station had declared in April that they sold the building to the Church of Scientology.
The independent TV station, KCET-TV, is relocating from its current location at Sunset Boulevard in Los Feliz to a 14-story building on Alameda Avenue, called The Pointe. KCET will be using one and a half of the floors of the building in a reported 55,000 square feet of space, almost half the size of their current studio's lot.
Earlier this year, the studio decided to sell their lot to the Church of Scientology for an undisclosed amount. KCET would continue occupying the space until a new location for their studios was found. KCET will apparently be moving into their new headquarters early 2012.
KCET became an independent station in October 2010 when board members voted to stop broadcasting the Public Broadcasting Station's (PBS) programming, which they had been broadcasting for over 40 years. According to a statement made on the KCET website, kcet.org, by studios President Al Jerome, the decision took three years to discuss and months to negotiate but that ultimately an agreement could not be reached and PBS allegedly did not want to reduce fees. The station now aims to broadcast local programming.
“While some things are definitely changing, one thing will remain the same: KCET is still your non-profit, commercial-free public television service,” said Jerome in a statement.
