Los Feliz Loves Leo
Posted by Alice Perez on Jul 14, 2013 - 12:58:51 AM

Los Feliz Branch Library was the former location where Leonardo DiCaprio lived.

LOS FELIZOn the corner of Franklin Avenue and Hillhurst Avenue sat the former home of an American heartthrob, acclaimed, award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Audiences first fell in love with DiCaprio playing the role of Romeo in the film “Romeo and Juliet” and recently stealing the hearts as the dreamy and wealthy Jay Gatsby in “The Great Gatsby.”

So why does Los Feliz love Leo? Leonardo lived in a duplex located on Franklin Avenue while he was a teenager. The duplex was torn down, and several years later the Los Angeles City Library department obtained the property and adjoining property to build the library, indicated Brenda Breaux, Public Relations for Los Angeles City Libraries. The Los Feliz Branch Library opened its doors to the community back in 1999 “in its current location at 1874 Hillhurst Avenue; the Los Feliz branch opened on April 8, 1999,” Breaux told Canyon News.

Stepping into the Los Feliz Branch Library, visitors will look around at this modern day library with wood panels creating a warm and cozy place to visit and open up a book. “They should expect the same thing they get when visiting the Central Library and any of the other 71 branch libraries free and easy access to six million books, state-of-the-art technology, information and the opportunity for life-long learning,” said Breaux.

Visitors of all ages can tuck themselves in a cozy corner and open a book, browse the web, flip through the pages of magazines from A to Z. “The DiCaprio Family Foundation continues to donate annually to support various projects at the Los Feliz Branch. They have funded the computers located in the DiCaprio Computer Center, provided funding for Computer Aides/Cybernauts since the center opened. They have also provided special funding such as a five-year subscription to the New York Times after Leonardo appeared in 'Gangs of New York',” said Breaux.

Fans of Leo will go gaga over the Leonardo DiCaprio Computer Center, a computer room filled with movie posters of  DiCaprio’s blockbuster hits from “Catch Me If You Can” and “Django Unchained” to “ Revolutionary Road” and “Titanic.” “Through the generosity of the DiCaprio Foundation, the library has a rotating display of framed posters from films Mr. DiCaprio has been in,” Breaux told Canyon News. He quoted himself best saying “I’m the king of the world,” since becoming a child star, teenage heartthrob, and today an A-list celebrity rubbing shoulders and working with the who’s-who of Hollywood.

“Most users notice the large posters and the mounted sign designating the Computer Center as the Leonardo DiCaprio Computer Center; we often have tourists from all over the world make a trip to see the room. Staff is always happy to let them know about the connection and his support,” said Breaux.

Don’t be surprised if one day while reading through the pages of the New York Times or joining your child at Story Time you see a green eyed, dusty blonde, quite the looker type walking into Los Feliz. No your eyes are not deceiving you, that the man walking in the door might be Leonardo DiCaprio in the flesh. “Several times a year, Mr. DiCaprio has been seen visiting the library or showing off the Computer Center to friends. He always keeps a very low profile”¦The most recent is Django,” said Breaux.

This summer cool off by diving into a book, surf the web or ride the pages of magazines at Los Feliz Branch Library. And also walk the footsteps of legendary and Los Feliz native actor Leonardo DiCaprio, and feel like the king or queen of the world!
