Tanker Fire Around Los Feliz
LOS FELIZ—A tanker fire occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13 on the northbound CA-2 freeway near the northbound I-5. The gravel truck overturned with around 7500 to 8500 gallons of gasoline that it was carrying, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. A portion of the northbound 5 Freeway was temporarily closed down because of the incident.

The Los Angeles Fire Department is currently active, fighting the fire around the surrounding area and communities. The LAPD Northeast Area has sent out advisory notice to the residents in the surrounding communities such as Los Feliz, Atwater Village, Silver Lake, Elysian Valley and Echo Park.

The LAFD warned people to avoid vapor smells, storm drains and manhole covers as much as possible.  LAFD spokesperson Brian Humphrey stated that a large amount of the gasoline has probably run off into the manholes and storm drains, as well as the Los Angeles River, which might potentially harm the river ecology. The bike route along the Los Angeles River south of Fletcher has also been temporarily shut down. The Fire Department is going to be working actively with local, regional, state and federal environmental authorities to minimize the impact on the river, Humphrey stated.

According to the LAFD, no one was hurt by the incident, and the grade of the gasoline has not yet been determined. Firefighters have been deployed to monitor the spill for about a mile along the river, as the river was ablaze for about four hours after the incident occurred.
