The Secrets Of Fern Dell

"Secrets of Fern Dell," involves a talk about the behind-the-story of Griffith Park's hidden oasis and the new research.
LOS FELIZ—On Thursday, August 15, the Friends of Griffith Park will present "Secrets of Fern Dell," a talk about the behind-the-story of Griffith Park's hidden oasis, which was recently named "one of the 12 most threatened cultural landscapes in America."

As part of the Griffith Park Lecture Series, the Los Feliz Library will host this free public lecture with special guest Bernadette Soter, the Vice President of Friends of Griffith Park, talking about the "who, what, when, where, and how" of the Fern Dell.

The Fern Dell is the only one of its kind in California, where more than 50 fern species find shelter under the California sycamores alongside winding trails. For close to a century, the Fern Dell has been rooted in Griffith Park since 1914 when the Parks Department started planting ferns near the ravine. In the 1920s came the terraced pools, bridges, and faux blois elements of today. Over the decades, the Fern Dell has become a 'must-see' in the SoCal and LA guide books and it has been printed on post cards.

Today, the Fern Dell shows signs of aging. It is currently undergoing the first-ever restoration project called the Cultural Landscape Assessment of historic Fern Dell headed by the Friends of Griffith Park. With the help and support from professional landscape architects, botanists, and historic conservation consultants, the project will help bring the Fern Dell back to its prominent standing.

Learn about the hidden treasures of each layer of this green oasis and hear a discussion on this paramount restoration to one of Los Angeles’ historic landmarks. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the lecture starting at 6:45 p.m. Register at lfeliz@lapl.org to receive more info on upcoming events and lectures.
