121 Cited In Crosswalk Safety Operation
Posted by Melissa Simon on Sep 30, 2013 - 2:43:19 PM

MALIBU—The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) conducted a crosswalk safety enforcement operation on Friday, September 27, which led to 121 citations.

Sgt. Philip Brooks of the Lost Hills/Malibu Sheriff’s Station told Canyon News the operation was conducted in the 22500 block of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) and lasted for over five hours.

“We had people crossing at a marked crosswalk and issued citations to people who failed to yield to the pedestrian that was legally in the crosswalk,” Brooks said.

Brooks said the reason the Sheriff’s department conducted the operation was due to numerous complaints of pedestrians and near misses in the crosswalks in and around Malibu. He said there have been three fatal collisions involving pedestrians this year alone on PCH.

During the operation, Brooks said 121 citations were issued, with 110 of those issued to drivers that failed to yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk. Brooks added that five citations were for the more dangerous violation of passing a stopped vehicle that had already yielded to a pedestrian along with some other miscellaneous citations.

Brooks said this operation was one of the first done in quite some time that he could remember and that this kind of operation is not usually common. He added that the Sheriff’s department is trying to educate the public on pedestrian safety.

“Obviously we’d like some improvements to the crosswalks in Malibu where the only demand of the pedestrian would be to push a button and that would create a red signal, red light, so cars would know to stop,” he said. “They tend not to stop for just constant flashing lights. We want drivers to be aware of pedestrians and be on the lookout and make sure they stop for them once they’re in the street,” he added.
