15th Annual Chumash Day Celebration Set
Posted by Carmen Herrera on Apr 5, 2013 - 10:41:34 AM

MALIBUFor the fifteenth year in a row, the Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering will host a weekend of all-day long festivities to celebrate the Native American Culture.

In celebration of one of the first settlers in the country, the event will honor the Chumash Indians who settled in 18th century in the local Santa Monica Mountains. The Chumash tribe called themselves “the first people,” and their territory once ranged 7,000 miles alongside Malibu to the San Joaquin Valley.

Part of tradition is every April, multitudes of tribes from all over the country and various parts of the world, arrive to Bluffs Park to celebrate the rich history and culture of these early settlers. Also known as “seashell people,” the Chumash depended on the California coasts for resources; now, the weekend celebrations are open to many different Indian groups and the local cities nearby.
