Posted by Melissa Simon on Aug 19, 2013 - 2:38:54 PM

MALIBU—Thirty-four drivers were arrested during a DUI and driver's license checkpoint at John Tyler Drive on Pacific Coast Highway on Friday, August 16, as part of the Avoid DUI Campaign.

During the checkpoint, which took place between 7:30 p.m. Friday and 3:30 a.m. Saturday, a total of 1,769 vehicles went through the checkpoint and 1,451 of those drivers were evaluated, according to Sgt. Philip Brooks of the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff station.

“The goal of the DUI/DL Checkpoint was removing impaired drivers and to bring awareness to the public of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol,” according to the Los Angeles Sheriff Department’s (LASD) Nixle.

The Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 100 DUI deployments overnight in Los Angeles County, according to Nixle.

The PCH checkpoint was only one of many checkpoints that took place across the region on Friday night. According to LASD, 143 individuals were arrested across 100 counties for DUI of alcohol or drugs.

Multiple DUI checkpoints will be held until midnight on Labor Day on September 2 during the 18-day Summer/Labor Day Campaign.

“Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs—Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, and Under Arrest,” according to Nixle.

Police, Sheriff and the CHP are encouraging drivers to make the community safer by reporting drunk drivers by calling 911.

The outcome of the PCH DUI and driver’s license checkpoint is as follows, according to Nixle:
