MALIBU—This weekend, police officials will be conducting a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the Malibu city limits. The checkpoint is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, and will go on until 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 5. Proper licensing checks will be ongoing in addition to checking for drivers who are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The DUI checkpoints are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and are being put in place to reduce the number of incidents that result from driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Those who have studied the effects of these checkpoints have found that drug and alcohol related incidents decrease by at least 20 percent when the public is aware that there will be checkpoints that occur often.

Consequences of driving under the influence include jail time, suspension of license, DUI classes as well as fines and fees which can ultimately add up to thousands of dollars.

Police officials are asking citizens to use caution and common sense before getting behind the wheel and if they are under the influence, they are urged to attain another form of transportation.
