Malibu police responded to a call made Tuesday night at 11:29 p.m., arriving at Sterling’s home on the 22600 block of Pacific Coast Highway to find him dead. It appears as though the cause of death was a drug overdose. However, an autopsy and toxicology tests will be performed to determine an exact cause of death, which could take up to 6 weeks.

The person who made the call is currently unidentified. Friends of the deceased have stated that they had not seen Sterling for days before his body was found.

Scott Sterling, 32, received much public attention in 1999 after shooting childhood friend Phillip Scheid at his father’s Beverly Hills home. Sterling was 19 at the time, and claimed it was self defense, and that Scheid attacked him with a knife. He used a Mossberg Model 500C 20-gauge shotgun after a physical altercation over actress Lindsey McKeon, whom both were involved with. The charges were eventually dropped.

According to reports, Sterling struggled with type 1 diabetes and addiction. As of now, his death has not been related to diabetes.

Parents Donald Sterling and Shelly Sterling have issued the following statement: "Our son Scott has fought a long and valiant battle against Type 1 Diabetes. His death is a terrible tragedy, the effects of which will be felt forever by our family and all those who knew and loved him."
