Fire Caused By Car Crash Quickly Doused
Posted by Damian Kelly on Jul 25, 2012 - 10:54:30 PM

MALIBU—On Tuesday, July 24, a brush fire that began when a vehicle crashed into a power pole and downed several power lines was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Reports indicate that the fire, which was located on Latigo Canyon Road and Ocean View Drive, was reported at 11:49 a.m. Flames quickly spread to half an acre but firefighters swiftly took charge.

Two helicopters and up to 10 firefighters responded to the fire, which didn’t threaten any structures.  The fire reportedly was caused by a woman swerving to avoid a coyote and subsequently crashing into a power pole just before 12 p.m.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said that Latigo Canyon Road was closed from Pacific Coast Highway to Kanan Dume Road and was expected to be shut down until 8pm on Wednesday.

More than 3,000 Southern California Edison customers were without power due to the crash and ensuing fire, according to SCE’s website.

Two separate Edison circuits were damaged that impacted residents in two areas around Latigo Canyon Road.

The first outage affected 973 customers, but 799 got the power back almost immediately. However, the 174 remaining customers remained without power.

Meanwhile, the second outage hit 2,237 customers but power was soon restored to 1,094 customers.

As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, three customers remained without power, which was expected to be restored around 8pm.
