MALIBU—Amidst a brush fire near Mulholland Highway at Las Virgenes Road, L.A. County Fire Department is investigating what could be the vestigial signs of a possible plane wreckage.

The one-acre brush fire in the mountains above Malibu was reported Monday, April 29, at 2:04 p.m. As of 3:45 p.m., LAFD had the fire ten percent contained as helicopters worked to minimize flames.

At this time, investigators are working to determine if the brush fire was caused by plane debris after the hard landing of a Cessna plane at the Westlake Village golf course. The plane touched down around 2:15 p.m.

According to L.A. County Fire Inspector Quvondo Johnson, the potential plane wreckage was spotted by a helicopter crew near the brush fire and ground crews were hiking up to the site to examine it.

“It could be some debris that was already up there,” Johnson explained. “It could be something off the plane that went down off the golf course.”

Johnson said that a total of 115 firefighters were at the scene, and as of yet, there is no official word on what caused the fire.

“We don’t know if it’s debris from the plane, debris from that plane clipping another plane or something totally different,” Johnson said. The Lost Hills/Malibu Sheriff’s Station reported that Mulholland Highway and closed to all eastbound traffic starting at Cornell Road.
