Malibu Hosts 16th Annual Chumash Day

MALIBU—The 16th Annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering will be held at Malibu Bluffs Park on the weekend of April 12-13.

 

The event will begin on Saturday, lasting from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and will continue on Sunday at 10 a.m. concluding at 5 p.m. The Grand Entry or Opening Ceremony will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with Chumash-Tataviam elder, Alan Salazar, performing the invocation and prayer. Sunday’s official Opening Ceremony will be at 12 p.m.

 

Festival Net estimates a total attendance of 5,000 at the Powwow. There will be free admission and parking on the corner of Civic Center and Webb Way, with a free shuttle service to and from the park, as stated on the Malibu City website’s Events page.

 

The Powwow will have traditional Native American food (including “fry bread”), tribal ceremonies, arts and crafts activities for children, as well as dance performances with special guests.
