Malibu Increases DUI Checkpoints
Posted by Katherine Noland on Dec 11, 2012 - 4:20:56 PM

MALIBU—The city of Malibu announced Monday, December 10 that they will be implementing a new anti-DUI program which will increase DUI checkpoints and public education that teaches the risks of driving under the influence.

Aimed at preventing deaths resulting from DUI's, there will be an increase of checkpoints along the Pacific Coast Highway. The recently adopted anti-DUI program is funded through the $108,175 grant that was awarded to the city of Malibu by the California Office of Traffic Safety.

According to the Director of Office of Traffic Safety Christopher J. Murphy, from 2006 to 2010 checkpoints have had a profound effect on the decrease of deaths from DUI's in California.

On a press release sent out on December 10, Mayor Lou La Monte said, "It is crucial to educate and remind all citizens that one person's decision to drive under the influence cannot only harm that individual, but also devastate an entire community. We thank the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the California Office of Traffic Safety for their help in implementing this anti-DUI program in Malibu and appreciate the patience and cooperation of any drivers inconvenienced by the checkpoints. We must all work together to prevent future tragedies."
