Malibu Lagoon Reopened
Posted by Nedda Alishahi on Mar 20, 2013 - 6:37:53 PM

MALIBU—The State Parks project to restore and improve the Malibu Lagoon finished last Friday and it is open again to the public. According to supporters of the restoration project, which took about eight months to complete, the water circulation is now greatly improved, allowing cleaner water in.

According to the Malibu Lagoon Restoration Project website, the Lagoon has been “used as a dumping site for debris and construction waste during much of the last century [and] the western portion of the lagoon suffers from poor circulation. As a result, the water’s oxygen levels have plummeted to near zero in sections, which threatens fish and wildlife and promotes the proliferation of bacteria that is harmful to everything.”

To fix this problem, those working in the restoration project removed excess sediment and also reshaped the western channels in order to improve the flow of water in the area.

In addition to these improvements, the website also states that the restructuring of the Malibu Lagoon will allow everyone to learn more about the “lagoon’s complex ecosystem.” New viewing areas are also in place to allow for better bird watching and an improved greenway from the business district to the beach will “enhance the Malibu experience for local residents and visitors alike.”
