Methodist Church To Host Lecture

MALIBU — The Malibu United Methodist Church will be hosting “Connecting the Past to the Present,” as a part of their Charles Green Memorial Lecture & Discussion Series, on January 29. The event will be facilitated by Larry Jones, a former history teacher at
MalibuParkJunior High School and Academic Decathlon coach at
The lecture and discussion will have two topics. The first topic will center on the history of South and will focus on events such as the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre, the 1967 student uprising at
SOWETO and more. The event will shed light on the anti-Apartheid movement by looking at the lives of Nelson Mandela and Steven Biko.

The second topic will focus on the Hudson River School, America’s first art movement. Attention will be given to the works of Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, Albert Bierstadt and other 19th century artists. Jones will examine the history of the
U.S. and its gradual changes through the eyes of these painters, and discuss how their art was able to capture the imaginations of both Americans and non-Americans.
The event will take place from 6:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.; light refreshments will be provided during a reception preceding the event.
