Ralphs Removes Rat Poison From Shelves
Posted by Kyle Maloney on Apr 10, 2013 - 10:38:33 AM

MALIBU—The management team of the Ralphs grocery store, located at 23841 Malibu Road, removed a powerful rodenticide from its shelves after they received a disclaimer from the Malibu Agricultural Society.

Assistant Manager Jeffrey Keller explained that Ralphs' concern for the wildlife led to their removal of the product.

In March, the store began selling the new product, Tomcat Mouse Killer II, an indoor poison designed to kill house mice. The poison contains the active ingredient Bromethalin, a highly potent toxicant which inhibits the central nervous system in rodents, leading to paralysis and ultimately death.

According to the Malibu Agricultural Society, the toxin has been known to not only kill household rodents, but it also affects local wildlife such as snakes, hawks, owls, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, bobcats and mountain lions.

Secretary of the Malibu Agricultural Society Kian Schulman explained that an educational package was created in order to illustrate the problem in the Santa Monica Mountains. Less than a week later, management pulled the Tomcat Mouse Killer II from its shelves.

The Malibu Agricultural Society also influenced CVS to pull rat poisons from its shelves back in December after a dead mountain lion was discovered by hikers in Point Mugu State Park near Malibu in November. The mountain lion had traces of rat poison in its system.
