MALIBU—The Scott Family Charitable Fund donated half a million dollars to the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Fund on Wednesday, August 28.

This is the second largest gift the Education Fund has received from a donor since the $4.8 million donation from the Peggy Bergman Estate.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District had adopted an intensive, six-part campaign that’s primary goal is to provide quality academic opportunities to every student in the district. The initiative, dubbed as the “Vision For Student Success,” focuses on the necessity of providing professional instructional aides and teachers in classrooms. The money that was granted will also go towards the professional development of teachers.

In November 2011, the Board of Education voted to raise money for staff costs including teacher training and professional programs. The initiative is intended to cushion the costs of education for parents and instead transfer it to the charges for Education Foundation, so that parents have to only be burdened with the costs of providing supplies or for field trips.

The education plan will be successful in alleviating the disparities between different schools with various levels of funding, such as schools with wealthier parents and those that are from lower-income families. This is because funding will now be equally distributed to pay for special instruction classes and extra instruction time for all students regardless of which income bracket their families fall under.

The foundation’s fundraising goal of $4 million needs to be met by January 2014. They have reached $1.9 million.
