MALIBU—On Thursday, November 3, the City of Malibu and the Lost Hills/Malibu Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department provided an education seminar about the Sheriff’s Teen Traffic Offender Program, commonly known as STTOP, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Malibu City Hall, which is located at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road.

STTOP is an intervention program designed to prevent reckless and dangerous teenage driving. The STTOP program requests citizens to call in and report dangerous teen drivers since police are not always available to witness a driving offense. If a driving offender can be identified, a sheriff’s deputy will conduct an intervention with the driver and their family. The program’s purpose is to help encourage safe driving for teenagers.
Malibu is one of the first cities to support and participate in STTOP, and on November 3, Deputy Edwin Tamayo and other guest speakers were present to share important information with parents and young drivers.
“One of our main goals is to reach out to the community to help educate parents on some of the laws that pertain to new teen drivers," Tamayo told Canyon News in regards to the event. "By doing this, parents can teach their children what to do and not do when they start driving. Many teens get their license and haven't learned what a big responsibility they are taking on.”
One of the modern issues with driving accidents is texting while driving. Malibu City’s recreation supervisor, Kristen Riesgo, spoke to Canyon News, noting, “While drinking and driving continues to be a leading cause of reckless driving, texting is becoming a common problem."
Families attending the seminar learned more about bad driving habits, new traffic laws and driving insurance. To learn more about the STTOP program, please visit STTOP.net.
