Sobriety Checkpoint In Malibu
Posted by Shelby Stiner on Jun 26, 2013 - 8:35:04 PM

MALIBU—A DUI and driver’s license checkpoint will be conducted by the Malibu/Lost Hills Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Friday, June 28.

The checkpoint will be conducted within the Malibu city limits at an undisclosed location between 7:30 p.m. and 3:30 a.m.

Officers will be checking drivers passing through the checkpoint for any signs of alcohol or drug impairment as well as checking drivers for correct licensing.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol related vehicle crashes cost more than $37 billion a year and, in 2010, caused more than 10,000 deaths.

Research also shows that when checkpoints are well publicized and conducted often, alcohol related crashes drop 20 percent.

“DUI checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California,” Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety, said in a press release. “But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one third of traffic fatalities, Malibu needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide.”

As well as receiving jail time, drivers who are caught driving impaired can expect license suspension, insurance increases along with fines, DUI classes and fees that can exceed $10,000.
