Thanksgiving Comes Early For City's Homeless
Posted by Damian Kelly on Nov 17, 2012 - 7:58:27 PM

MALIBU—At least 300 homeless men and women enjoyed a taste of the holidays as they were served a Thanksgiving meal at the auditorium of Webster Elementary on Thursday, November 15.

Eighteen turkeys and lots of Thanksgiving trimmings were served as part of the Standing on Stone Community Outreach Program, which offers a weekly free meal at the school.

Men and women from the Malibu Rotary, Our Lady of Malibu, Malibu Presbyterian Church and Pepperdine University volunteered to help prepare the meals and serve them.

The event, which was co-organized by Kay Glander and Malibu Rotary member Maggie Luckerath, reportedly had its largest turnout ever.  People had to be fed outside since there wasn’t any more room to be seated inside the auditorium.

SOS Malibu runs the city’s only emergency shelter and works with nearly the entire city’s homeless population.  To date, the organization has helped 349 people transition off of Malibu’s streets.

According to the organization’s website, its mission is “to help people make a transition to a better life. We do this through emergency services, friendship, mentoring, transition assistance, and win-win relationships with our community.”

SOS Malibu is operated fully by volunteers.  They can be contacted at (805) 499-4279 or at hollie@sosmalibu.org.
