MELROSE
—On March 15, Melrose Elementary School, a mathematics/science/technology magnet school, will need gardening volunteers to assist in the beautification of the elementary school campus. The campus’ ‘extreme makeover’ is possible due to a grant they received from EnrichLA, an environmental non-profit that puts in gardens in local low income areas in Los Angeles. According to EnrichLA’s website, their organization is fighting to put a stop to the obesity epidemic by providing healthy foods to encourage healthy habits.

A flyer provided by the elementary school stated that EnrichLA will be providing and moving gardening beds so every class will have their own. An irrigation will be installed to avoid manual watering during school vacations and breaks, a wooden fence will run from the west side to the north side to connect to the chain link fence on Detroit, a small wooden fence will be installed at the open end of the garden area to provide a border. A gate in the short chain link fence will be installed and there will be 2- 3 citrus trees planted in the in-ground bed. Picnic tables will be built near the in-ground bed, and a washing and prep station will be installed near the Detroit beds.

There will be two shifts to participate in the gardening; the first shift will be 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The second shift will continue from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  At least 25 volunteers will be needed at each shift to make this feat possible.  The event will be located at the Melrose Elementary Mathematics/Science/Technology Magnet on 731 N. Detroit Street in Los Angeles, CA 90046.  To participate, sign up to attend at the EnrichLA link on the Melrose Elementary school’s Homepage: http://melrose-lausd-ca.schoolloop.com/.
