LAPD's Mentoring Center Opened Last Week
Posted by Megan Perry on Aug 28, 2011 - 5:11:11 PM

MELROSE—A Los Angeles Police Department operated youth mentoring center opened last Thursday, August 18, so children and teens can have a place of refuge from the crime on the streets. The mentoring center, Tomorrow’s Future, is a youth oriented alternative and workshop to combat the influences of gang and tagging crews, said the LAPD.

Tomorrow’s Future is at a storefront located at 5824 Santa Monica Boulevard, in an area known as the Santa Monica/Western Corridor, which is home to one of the most impoverished communities that lies within Hollywood.

The storefront has an explicit purpose of nurturing and welcoming of youth, presenting positive role models, such as police officers, community leaders with teaching experience, supplying bi-lingual tutors who themselves were area residents and beneficiaries of LAPD youth programs.

A lot of thought went into the location of the storefront. The LAPD said, the storefront location was selected so it would be accessible to those most in need, be situated near the majority of schools, have parking availability, and be a prominent fixture and infusion of “something good” within the community landscape.

The Commanding Officer of the Hollywood Area started the first ever bi-lingual community foot-beat to begin the much needed bridge building of trust with a neighborhood filled with apprehension, as of April 2011, said the LAPD. “To date, the relationships have already begun. The next step or layer of positive influence is a permanent storefront to prove to this community that we (the LAPD) care, we are here to stay, and we are investing in their most precious resource, their children,” said the LAPD in a news release.

To inform residents that the LAPD is there to help, there will be outreach through schools, clergy groups and businesses. A calendar of special programs, speakers and training opportunities for youth and their parents will be published on a monthly basis in addition to the daily assistance from officers and volunteer tutors. Important tools such as computers and Internet access for school projects will be available.
