MELROSE—The National Council of Jewish Women/ Los Angeles (NCJW/LA) will host their third annual clothing giveaway on Sunday, December 8, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. At the event, various clothing items for men, women and children will be available, including children’s books and toys.

The NCJW/LA is informing participants to leave any bags or suitcases to carry the items at home; attendees will be given a bag to carry what they find. The event has always taken place in the first week of December.

The NCJW/LA aims to help people in need. Their mission on their website states, “To serve and advocate for those who are at risk and in need.” The organization provides a free telephone counseling service to give assistance to those going through a tough time, whether it's depression or loneliness.

According to a press release provided to Canyon News via the NCJW/LA, the annual clothes giveaway has been quite a success. A member of the NCJW/LA who wished to remain anonymous told Canyon News that the line for the giveaway starts as early as 6:00 a.m. and can stretch as far as half a mile. The line consists of mostly under-privileged families queuing up to see what basic necessities their family can attain.

The source informed Canyon News throughout the year, they receive clothing from their various thrift shop locations; the clothing in the best condition is set aside for the giveaway. At the event, they provide bags that resemble shopping bags, but are much larger in size for the people attending the event.

According to their website, they collect over 80,000 items of clothing from their eight different thrift shop locations in California, as well as their eBay shop. Last year’s giveaway saw over 85,000 items of clothing picked up by over 5,000 people. The event will take place at 543 N. Fairfax Avenue in Melrose.
