LAPD's Wilshire Division Open House
Posted by Megan Perry on Aug 19, 2011 - 11:41:52 AM

MELROSE—The Los Angeles Police Department’s Wilshire Division hosted an open house Sunday, August 14, at the local police station as a thank you to the community for their support. The entire event was free, including admission, food and activities. Specialized units were invited to give a better understanding of the activities performed by the LAPD, such as the dive team, the bomb squad and the Special Weapons and Tactics team.

The LAPD Wilshire Division set up some motorcycles at the Open House event on Sunday to give the community an opportunity to observe and take pictures with.

It was a good event to meet and greet the officers, and even the senior lead officers, that work day in and day out protecting the community. There was a helicopter that came to land on the helicopter pad on the roof. The traffic division brought in a motorcycle so guests could take pictures with, and a wrecked vehicle from a drunk driver to show the effects to the vehicle and to instruct on what could occur if someone is in an accident. They also had classic and modern police cars to look at, take pictures standing by.

The Los Angeles Air Division landed on the roof of the police department as part of the live entertainment at the Open House event on Sunday.

In addition, the people from Animal Services were also present, giving out information on pets and they also brought some younger animals for the community to play with. The kids stayed very busy with the games in the Kids Fun Zone, along with guided tours around the station and the live entertainment exhibits.

Police officers passed out bags with information on the dangers of drunk driving, information on the department’s services and lots more. The bags were also useful to hold other literature that was being passed out by other patrons at the event, such as groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Toward the end of the event, the department held a raffle with prizes that were donated from businesses around the city.

Out with the old, in with the new-- The LAPD placed some of the old cruisers along side the more modern ones for a chance to let the community see the differences and appreciate the changes at the Open House event Sunday.

The open house is an annual event that the LAPD has hosted almost every year since the police station has opened at the Wilshire Division. Due to the city’s tightening budget, last year the event was not able to be held. This year the attendance was less than the average amount, but the turn-out was still pretty good at around 1,000 people. The police opened their house for the community to enter, connect and appreciate. They also hope that events like this one will encourage the community to feel more connected with law enforcement.
