PACIFIC PALISADES—On Thursday, September 22, a 34-year-old music teacher who was arrested
by police for allegedly trying to meet up with an 11-year-old girl in
Pacific Palisades for a sex date pleaded not guilty to multiple related charges in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Joseph Lee Hedderich of Culver City entered his not guilty plea at an arraignment hearing before Jude Keith Schwartz, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office. He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 25.
Hedderich was arrested on September 1 at 12
p.m. by officers of the Los Angeles Police Department's Juvenile
Division with assistance from the Los Angeles Regional Internet Crimes
Against Children Task Force, a news release and booking data state.
This arrest took place after authorities set up Hedderich by assuming
the girl's identity with which he allegedly had contact via an I-touch
digital device he gave her. Via this device, Hedderich had sent her
inappropriate photographs and email messages that her parent eventually
discovered.
Her parent alerted police, who used the device to continue to contact
Hedderich and arrange a meeting in Pacific Palisades at which he was
arrested on September 1.
After Hedderich's arrest at 1:04 p.m., he was booked on attempted oral
copulation with a minor under 14. He was released on $100,000 on
September 2 at 12:41 a.m.
Deputy District Attorney Bradley McCartt of the Sex Crimes
Division said in the news release that Heddrich has been formally
charged with multiple counts including attempted lewd act upon
a child, meeting minor for lewd purposes, sending harmful matter and
contact with minor for a sexual offense.
If convicted of these charges, Hedderich could be sentenced to a maximum of six years and four months in prison.
The LAPD's Sexually Exploited Child Unit told Canyon News that
Hedderich's
photo may yet be released. This is still under consideration.
Hedderich works as an independent musical teacher for the Colburn
School of Performing Arts, the Westside Academy of Dance, The California
Institute of the Arts and the Los Angeles Ballet.
