Big Turnout For First “Hike With Mike”

Hike With Mike
PACIFIC PALISADES—On Sunday, September 8, more than 75 people turned out for the “Hike with Mike” event planned by the 11th District Councilman Mike Bonin. The hike lasted about two hours that took place at the Murphy Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains of Pacific Palisades.

On Bonin’s official Facebook page he posted the following, “Incredible morning! More than 75 people turned out for our first ”˜Hike with Mike.’ Residents from every single community in the 11th District spent two hours hiking to and from Murphy Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains of Pacific Palisades. We got in a lot of exercise, appreciated some stunning views, and learned a heck of a lot about the area and its colorful history from Randy Young, our tremendous docent. Stay tuned! More ”˜Hikes with Mike’ to come. There's a lot of natural beauty to see and appreciate in this district.”

“Hike with Mike” is one of the events planned under Bonin’s multi-pronged ”˜Access 11’ initiative that intends to use “direct personal outreach and technology to make sure residents and neighborhoods have access to city government and have multiple ways to make their voices heard,” as stated on the Mike Bonin official website. The hiking event counts as the personal component of his Access 11 approach. According to Bonin, the two components of the approach are personal and technological.

“Local government needs to listen better. We need a Mayberry approach and an iPhone sensibility,” said Bonin in February following his induction as a councilman.

The purpose of ”˜Hike with Mike’ is to invite residents from every community in the district to come and join him for informal discussion sessions during the hikes, while enjoying the district’s natural beauty, such as the Santa Monica Mountains, the Ballona Wetlands or the coast.

Apart from the hiking sessions, Bonin also has several other programs included as part of Access 11 to bring neighborhoods together, such as Neighborhood Office Hours, Neighborhood Service Fairs, Going Door to Door, Neighborhood Coffees, Internet Testimony and Virtual Town Halls.
