Posted by Nashfa Hawwa on Sep 9, 2013 - 11:22:33 PM

Marquez Charter School
PACIFIC PALISADES—The Marquez Charter School, is a distinguished school that has been promoting lifelong learning and maximizing student achievement since 1955. The school is looking for volunteers
to help with their CATCH Mentor Program.

The CATCH Mentor Program was initiated in acknowledgement of the fact that kids will benefits from one-on-one assistance a week from adults.

Mentors are carefully chosen through a selective process and are chosen to assist students with their homework. They are expected to commit to an hour a week between the end of September and early May. The Marquez Charter School website states, “One hour a week of your time can make a difference in a child’s school experience, self-esteem, and future success.”

Anybody from friends, local businesses, neighbors, or even grandparents are encouraged to mentor. Participants are not required to have a direct connection with the school.

There are few requirements that need to be met in order to be qualified to be a mentor. Participants that have ever helped a child with their homework, can spare one hour a week, have a clean record, have a clear TB status and would like to make a difference are encouraged to apply for the mentor program.

The Marquez Charter School is a K-5 school and in 1993 it was chosen as one of the first Charter Schools in California. It is also one of the five elementary schools in the Palisades Learn/Chapter Complex in the District.

The school has a high academic performance index. Last year, the school’s API rose to 934. Anyone who is interested in becoming a mentor for Marquez Charter School is encouraged to email Christi Catalano, CATCH coordinator, at
