Riviera To Host U.S. Amateur Championship
Posted by Damian Kelly on May 23, 2012 - 1:45:01 PM

PACIFIC PALISADES—In what it hopes will be a sign of bigger things to come, Riviera Country Club was selected on Monday, May 21 to be the host course for the 2017 United States Amateur Championship.  The United States Golf Association also announced that Riviera will partner with companion Bel-Air Country Club to host the stroke-play qualifying portion of the Amateur.

This will be the first time since 1976 that Riviera will host the U.S. Amateur although it has been busy hosting the Northern Trust Open, the L.A. stop for PGA professionals for 37 of the last 39 years.

According to reports, officials at Riviera are optimistic that if all goes well with the U.S. Amateur they will be able to land one of golf’s 4 majors, the U.S. Open.  However, reports indicate the course, which became known as Hogan’s Alley after Ben Hogan won the then-L.A. Open three times, is plagued by traffic and parking problems.

Riviera does have a history of hosting several of golf’s majors.  In 1948, they hosted the U.S. Open which saw Hogan win.  In 1983, the PGA Championship was held at Riviera which saw Hal Sutton emerge victorious.  1995 saw Riviera host the tournament again and Steve Elkington was the champion.  Then in 1998, Hale Irwin was victorious in the U.S. Senior Open held at Riviera.

The country club will be busy in the future as they will host the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships May 29 to June 3 and then will be expanding its driving range which is required to host a U.S. Open.
