School Withdraws Special Events Request

PACIFIC PALISADES—St. Matthew’s Parish requested to make changes to a conditional land use permit six months ago to make modifications to the school, but withdrew the request on September 4.

The modifications made in the request included the following:

· Increase enrollment from 325 to 384

· Increases the Parish’s special events from 12 to 16

· Increase the number of nighttime events that go past 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. from three to four

· Allow special event visitors to park on the public street north or south of the campus

· Reduce annual carpool counts from four to two

· Hold community meetings as requested rather than at fixed pre-set times

The school withdrew the request for additional special events and additional late night events after discussion with the community and local officials.

“We are also proposing a strict new compliance monitoring and reporting condition to make sure the conditions will be met. We are very happy to be able to make these concessions we have heard from some of our neighbors, while still seeking what we need most—permission to allow enrollment for up to 384 students,” according to a letter sent out by Head of School Stuart Work and Interim Rector George Martin.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) reviewed a recent traffic engineering report and concluded that traffic would not be significantly impacted should the enrollment increase at the Parish.

“St. Matthew’s Parish is voluntarily proposing to implement and abide by stricter carpool requirements than currently exist, thereby further helping to manage traffic on Bienveneda and neighboring streets,” Work wrote in a letter.

St. Matthew’s has been at their current location for 60 years and has maintained a strong religious presence since the beginning by educating “generations of local children who know and embody the school’s motto, ”˜Serve, Lead and Flourish,’” according to Work.
