12-Hour Police Standoff Ends In Suicide
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Feb 27, 2013 - 9:30:38 AM

SANTA MONICA—A hostage situation and 12-hour standoff in Santa Monica came to an end after the gunman reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday, February 27.

Police officers arrived at the 2900 block of Delaware Avenue just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26 after the 15-year-old hostage managed to escape from the house and call the authorities. The boy reported that the gunman was his father and was armed with a handgun. Additional weapons were later discovered by police in the home.

The teenager informed police that he and his 86-year-old grandmother were taken hostage inside the house where all three of them lived with the gunman's estranged wife. The incident allegedly stemmed from a fight he had with his wife who wasn't home at the time of the incident.

Santa Monica and Beverly Hills police SWAT teams surrounded the house and had neighbors evacuated in a roughly square-block area.
The SMPD’s SWAT team and crisis negotiators were helped by members of the Beverly Hills Police Department and the Santa Monica Fire Department. Crisis negotiators spoke with the mother-in-law and she told officers that she was uninjured.

At one point during the standoff, the woman was tied up and was unable to walk out of the house. The suspect untied her within the next couple of hours and police were able to get her to walk out at approximately 9:50 p.m. Tuesday. She was unharmed and was interviewed by police after she was examined by Santa Monica paramedics.

Police negotiators continued to speak with the suspect until about midnight when it ceased. The SWAT team used tactics in order to gain the man's attention, but it proved to be unsuccessful. Police then deployed gas into the home to try and get the gunman to walk out, but nothing happened.

Twelve hours after police first arrived at the scene, the man was found dead by SWAT team officers of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in a bedroom when they entered the home at about 4 a.m. Authorities have not released the gunman's name as of press time as a notification of next of kin is still pending.

Neighbors of the man indicated that he suffered from a brain aneurism two years ago and had allegedly turned to drugs. He was also said to be out of a job.

The LA County Coroner's office removed the body from the home at about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. SMPD robbery homicide investigators are currently investigating the case.
