Car-Free Contest Winners of March
Posted by Shine Huang on Apr 12, 2013 - 11:28:50 AM

SANTA MONICA—The City of Santa Monica has announced the results of March Car Free Contest.

Four schools in Santa Monica participated in the environmental protection event which advocated the habit of walking and biking to school. The participating schools included John Adams Middle School, Lincoln Middle School, Will Rogers Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School.

For the month of March, John Adams Middle School students awarded the most car-free miles with the record of 352 total miles without an automobile. Roosevelt Elementary School students won the second highest total miles with 267, with one second grade student walking 32 miles.

One first grade student at Will Roger Elementary biked a total of 19 miles, which is the longest biking distance among all of the participating schools. One eighth grade class in Lincoln Middle School had the highest level of participation.

“The goal of this contest is to create a fun environment that encourages families to incorporate bicycling and walking into their daily transportation choice,” said David Martin, Director of Santa Monica’s Planning and Community Development Department.

The Car-Free Contest is part of a larger Safe Routes to School pilot project managed by the City of Santa Monica in partnership with the Santa Monica and Malibu Unified School District and Parent Teacher Student Associations. Students tracked trips they made to school without using s car, and these car-free miles are counted each month. One target of this competition is to be the first class to walk and bike enough distance to reach San Francisco.

More winners will be announced during May’s Bike It Walk It events, to be held the week of May 6-10 at all Santa Monica-Malibu Unified schools.
