SANTA MONICA—Actor Charlie Sheen, has received his Santa Monica High School degree on Wednesday night, September 11, on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

He received his high school diploma from long-time friend and classmate Tony Todd. Sheen, born as Carlos Irwin Estevez was denied his diploma due to an argument with one of his teachers in high school. For 30 years, Sheen had been on the wait to get his much coveted high school diploma, but it was after his friend Tony Todd arranged some assignments and course work for him that helped Sheen gain his graduation diploma.

Sheen had completed all the required coursework and was supposed to walk on stage with the graduating class of 2013, but the unexpected mass shooting at the Santa Monica College jeopardized the ceremony.

On the show, Sheen told Leno that “I guess it just wasn’t meant to happen.” Leno told him that he had a surprise for him and suddenly produced a blue cap and gown. His friend Tony Todd walked towards Sheen with a diploma in his hand. Todd said of the diploma, “This is the real deal; you can’t go to Kinkos and get this.”

The decision to grant Charlie Sheen a high school diploma was made by the former Samohi Principal Laurel Fretz. Fretz was crucial in researching Sheen’s school records and eligibility as well as updating his transcripts.

Sheen, 48, is a fan of the Samohi baseball team and donates generously to the team to help improve baseball on campus.
