City Urges To Be Cautious On Pathways

SANTA MONICA—The pathway near the Santa Monica pier that extends all the way to Venice Beach is reportedly a popular but dangerous location for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The City of Santa Monica is asking all citizens to be extra cautious when they are walking or riding bicycles on the paths that are parallel to the beach. There are designated signs for both bicyclists and pedestrians, but there are still many people who do not abide by these rules and city officials are witnessing more and more accidents as a result of pedestrian and bicyclist collisions because of this.

The most recent incident occurred just a few days ago when a bicyclist and a pedestrian collided, resulting in the bicyclist needing to be taken to the hospital where she received proper treatment. Both identities are undisclosed, but the pedestrian was unharmed.

When the pedestrian spoke to officials he said that he witnessed such things occurring on a daily basis where people are unaware or not paying attention and accidents happening because of it. The pedestrian, a middle-aged man, said that while he walked away without any injuries, he witnessed an incident that almost resulted in yet another bicyclist and pedestrian accident as he was leaving Santa Monica that same day.

Some ways that officials say such accidents and hazards can be avoided are by looking both ways when crossing the pathway, making sure you are going the correct direction as there are two separate lanes that run in either direction, and also making sure you are walking or riding in your designated zones as both pedestrians and bicyclists have their own respective lanes.

City officials are also urging people to be more aware of their surroundings and to pay closer attention. Because the beaches and pathways at Santa Monica often become crowded and hectic, it is rather easy for an accident to occur and officials are advising individuals to read the proper signs and follow the rules that are in place for the pathways accordingly in order to avoid any accidents.
