Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Dec 26, 2012 - 3:49:16 AM

SANTA MONICA—The Santa Monica Police Department will conduct a DUI and Driver's License checkpoint on Monday, December 31 at an undisclosed location within the city.

The checkpoint is part of an ongoing campaign to prevent people being killed and injured due to intoxicated drivers. According to officials, DUI checkpoints identify offenders and remove them from the streets and in doing so, brings awareness to the community of the dangers of drinking and driving.

Officers will stop drivers passing through the checkpoint in order to indicate if there are any signs of drug or alcohol impairment. Drivers that are caught under the influence can expect jail time, license suspension and insurance increases as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, court probation and other expenses that can go over $10,000.

“Over the course of the past year, traffic collisions involving impaired drivers/riders were involved in 86 collisions, which have killed 2 and injured 26 people,” said Santa Monica Police Lieutenant Jay Trisler.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints are one of the most effective documented results as compared to other DUI enforcement strategies
"while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent," as stated in a press release by the SMPD.

Funding for the checkpoint is made possible by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The SMPD urge drivers to have a designated driver or call a taxi cab if they intend on drinking. For more information, contact
Phillbo Rubish at the SMPD Traffic Section at (310) 458-8950, or the Public Information Officer, Sergeant Richard Lewis at (310) 458-8462.
