SANTA MONICA—On Sunday, September 16, at
2:00 p.m. the Santa Monica Library will screen the documentary, “White Wash.” The
2011 documentary investigates African American history and
its relationship with the ocean.
“The documentary, is a film exploring the
complexity of race in America through the eyes of the ocean,” says the film’s
website. It explores slavery and civil rights and surfing in contemporary times
at surf sites in Santa Monica and Southern California.
The 78-minute film is
narrated by acclaimed Grammy Award winning musician, Ben Harper, and Tariq "Blackthought" Trotter of the Grammy Award winning hip hop group, The Roots,
who also provide the documentary’s soundtrack. Through the film “we learn the
power of transcending race as a constructive phenomenon,” states the official
White Wash website.
Following the screening will be a discussion. Discussion
panelists will include the film’s director, Ted Woods, blacksuring.com founder
Rick Blocker and historian Alison Rose Jefferson. The program is produced in
partnership with Heal the Bay, Santa Monica, Conservancy, the California
Historical Society, and the NAACP. The screening and discussion is part of a
three week celebration of Santa Monica’s coastal and water resources that begins on
Saturday, September 15, with Coastal Cleanup Day.
Admission to the program is free and all ages are
welcome, however, seating is limited and available on a first arrival basis. To
