SANTA MONICA—Santa Monica’s mayor will be joining with Mike Bonin, a new councilman for Los Angeles, to lead the second part of the new Expo Rail Line project.
The Expo Rail Line is a $2.43 billion dollar project that aims to make the west Los Angeles region more connected with downtown and Hollywood. So far, the Expo Rail Line has been extended to Culver City, with that station opening in April 2012, and now the focus is shifting to constructing the rail line so that it reaches downtown Santa Monica and connects the west Los Angeles area with the larger metropolitan.
Authorities are hoping that the extension of the Expo Rail Line will lead to greater usage of public transportation by residents and will further increase the cohesion and fluidity of the various regions. The increased use of public transportation is hoped to decrease the great amount of gridlock that Los Angeles commuters suffer on a daily basis. Additionally, the Expo Rail Line will be positioned in the Bergamot area and Santa Monica officials hope the increase in foot traffic will spark a revival in that neighborhood.
Pam O’Connor, Santa Monica’s mayor, has been appointed chairwoman of the Exposition Metro Line Construction Authority Board after previously having been the vice chairman. O’Connor is replacing County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky as chairman of the board. She will be overseeing the second stage as the Expo Line extends from Culver City to Santa Monica.
