SANTA MONICA—The city of Santa Monica may have fitness groups pay if they choose to work out in public parks or on the beach. It is believed that many trainers are earning money on city property rather than renting studios.

The city council will vote in January on whether or not trainers with more than two people should be banned all together from the Palisades Park. It will also be decided if trainers in other city parks or on the beach have to pay $100 for a yearly permit as well as give 15 percent of their profits to the city.

Additionally, trainers would have to be licensed and carry insurance against injury. If approved, these regulations can be put into affect as early as next year.
